Please join Bern’s Fine Wines & Spirits on Friday September 27th, from 6:30-8:00p.m for a Crush Hour featuring wines from Spain.

Known for bold reds, crisp whites, and distinctive sparkling and fortified wines, Spain has embraced international varieties and wine styles while continuing to place the primary emphasis upon its own native grapes.  This region has created a perfect blend of new and old world, and has always been a go to region for people who come into the wine shop wanting to start their journey into European wines.

Five Cheeses from Élevage will be paired with the wines, along with house made breads.  The price is $25.00 per person.  Reservations are requested, please book your ticket by clicking the link.

    Featured Wines

Bodegas Vina Herminia Reserva Rioja 2011 $17.95

Cherry red with ripe-cherry tones, lively, good maturation tones, good color, intense, ripe-cherry red meniscus. Hearty, fresh and complex on the nose, elegant and creamy, somewhat syrupy, with an agreeable oak floor and ripe-fresh cherry fruit flavor. Round, rich, flavorful and voluminous on the palate, a bit fleshy and long lasting with very intense finish. Winemaker notes

Bodegas Vina Herminia Excelsus Rioja 2014 $18.95

Bright violet color. Expressive dark berry and floral pastille scents are sharpened by suggestions of white pepper and smoky minerals. Plush and open-knit, showing good heft to its ripe raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors. Clings with very good tenacity on the finish, which features gentle tannins and a suggestion of candied flowers. Winemaker notes

Jean Leon Adelita Chardonnay 2016 $17.95

Made especially for The Columbia Restaurant right here in Tampa, this Chardonnay is very aromatic with tropical fruit, white peach and fennel with bright acidity to finish it off.

Espectacle del Montsant Grenache 2013 $119.95, Sale price; $85.95

This pure Garnacha from old vines in the village of La Figuera in Montsant showed a waterfall of red fruit and violets with subtle touches of spices in an elegant way. The palate is pure silk, quite fruit-driven with moderate acidity and silky tannins. 96 points Robert Parker

La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva 2009 $32.95

Very fresh and vivid 2009 with berries, dark spice and hints of walnuts. Full-bodied, reserved and so held back and muscular, but you don’t feel the tannins and the strength. A great wine. 96 points James Suckling

José Antonio García Aires de Vendimia Mencía de Valtuille 2016 $42.95

The red 2016 Aires de Vendimia Mencía de Valtuille is nothing like the previous vintages I have tasted. The wine has seen a great improvement and has a clean and floral nose, with contained ripeness and integrated oak. The palate is juicy, with round tannins, a soft texture and clean, persistent flavors. Very tasty. It reflects a general change I've noticed in the winery, where all wines have gained in elegance and precision—the fruit is more focused; ripeness is perfect; and the élevage respects the wines and helps them express the variety, place and vintage. 2016 was not an easy year, but the result is phenomenal. The fine fermented in foudre with full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in oak barrels of different sizes for 15 months. 92 points Wine Advocate

Avinyó Reserva Brut Nature Cava 2012 $19.95

Vivid straw color. Energetic citrus and orchard fruits, mineral subtones and floral complexity. The dry, fleshy and expansive palate shows sappy pear and orange zest flavors with very good cut and spicy lift. Finishes long with echoing mineral and candied ginger notes. 91 points Vinous

Grahams 20 year old Tawny port $59.95

A gorgeous tawny with dried figs, caramel, dried raisins and coffee beans. Full-bodied, sweet and delicious. This shows such length and beauty. I love the crème caramel and cooked apple tart on the finish. Some pecan pie. Crazy. Drink now. 94 points James Suckling
