Castello Romitorio
Castello Romitorio, a massive forteress of twelfth century standing out on the hilltop in Montalcino, Italy, now produces exquisite Tuscan wines and olive oil by a renowned Italian artist, Sandro Chia, whose passion and vision turned this abandoned castle into famous winery for the production of Brunello di Montalcino. Over the course of several years, Sandro Chia has restored Castello Romitorio by his own hand and transformed it into vineyards, setting up a cellar at the part of the castle's ground floor, purchasing the most modern equipment on the market. There is one white wine and five red wines produced under his own label, Castello Romitorio. Castello Romitorio's Brunello di Montalcino are made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, as local regulations require, as is the Rosso di Montalcino. Chia's estate also produces Brio, a red Tuscan table wine made from Sangiovese grapes. Grappa di Brunello has been made exclusively for Castello Romitorio by Signor Nannoni, master distiller, for the past two years. Chia's first wine was bottled in 1984 and, because "anti-economical" care that went into it, turned out to be exceptional from the start. The success of his wine surely is the result of his artistic perfectionism as he said, "I made it as much as I paint a picture, and all that paid off." Visit the Castello Romitorio website.

Castello Romitorio’s 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and brooding in its expression of tar, earthiness, flowers, spices, toasted oak and cherries. It reveals a fairly classic structure in its linearity, yet also shows an attractive sweetness and vibrancy to its black cherry fruit. This big, backward Brunello needs at ... more
