Vinedos Emiliana

Color: Intense violet. Bouquet: Black fruit such as berries, cassis, and forest fruits, delicately blended with oak and soft mineral notes. Taste: Well-balanced volume, soft, round tannins, and a long finish. Enjoy Coyam with hearty red meats with mild sauces, lightly seasoned red meats, fresh cheeses, pastas with spicy sauces, and dried fruit.

Wine Spectator

Concentrated, with a layer of creamy toast leading the way for blackberry and boysenberry fruit, dark cocoa, graphite and sweet tobacco. Has a lot of fruit in reserve, but also shows a nice note of terroir on the finish. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2009. 9,500 cases made.

Score: 90. —James Molesworth, May 31, 2007.

Wine Advocate

The 2005 Coyam is composed of 45% Syrah, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 11% Carmenere, and 3% Petit Verdot. It was made with organically grown grapes and was aged in a mix of French and American oak. It exhibits an attractive array of pepper, vanilla, clove, cassis, and black fruit aromas. There is ample ripe fruit, very good flavors with some complexity, but the finish is quite firm bordering on hardness. Time is likely to round this wine out at which point my score will appear to be conservative.

Score: 90. —Jay Miller, June 2007.

Wine Enthusiast

Emiliana began as Vinedos Organicos Emiliana, but now goes only by Emiliana because getting certified as an organic winery proved too difficult. Still, Emiliana’s vineyards are organically farmed, and this five-grape blend made by Alvaro Espinoza is intense and extracted yet still finely knit. It’s a serious wine with slight herbal/pine aromas, robust red-fruit flavors, and a smooth, stylish finish. Not overdone, so drink now.

Score: 90. —Michael Schachner, May 01, 2008.
