Glen Carlou

Color: Deep red with an intense brilliant hue. Aroma: Sandalwood, cloves, fresh black currant and dark bramble fruit. Flavor: Ripe tannins, full sweetness, clean intense blackberries and spice. Finish: Lingering, elegant and balanced with mouth-filling complexity on the finish. General: The 2004 vintage is smooth and rich with a prominent fruit character and ripe tannins. Ideal with rich food and red meat dishes. Enjoy now, but the classic structure will allow the wine to mature well for at least ten years.

Wine Spectator

Soft but rather fleshy, with fig, mesquite, licorice and chocolate notes guided by a gentle structure. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2009. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 9,500 cases made.

Score: 87. —James Molesworth, April 30, 2008.

Wine Advocate

A blend predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but including Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, Glen Carlou’s 2004 Grand Classique represents their introductory level red. Black currant, stewed mulberry, tar, and tobacco comprise an impressive aromatic opening gambit. Quite tangy and bright on the palate and with undeniable grip, this forceful red nevertheless tends toward a slightly sweet-sour impression and betrays a bit of heat and textural dryness from its 14.5% alcohol in the finish.

Score: 87. —David Schildknecht, August 2008.
