Product Description

The philosophy of Marco is to respect what the vineyards give him as much as possible, the work in the vines is more important to him than the work in the cellar. In fact he follows natural agricultural practices: spontaneous grass cover is left on the aisles, only sulphur and copper base products are sprayed, the vineyards are tended by hand (except for topping of the vines which is done with a machine). In the cellar only SO2, and very little of it, is added to the wines, wild yeasts are responsible for the alcoholic fermentation, no selected strains of bacteria are used to start up malolactic, the wines are not clarified nor filtered. The wines age in French oak barriques of which only 15-20% are new so as to maintain the fruit.

Wine Advocate

The 2011 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is a gorgeous wine with soaring intensity and a complete bouquet that is both sweet and savory at the same time. Thanks to the warm vintage, this wine offers a pronounced aromatic presentation with dark fruit, leather, spice and underbrush. This vintage can be consumed in the medium or long term, depending on your tastes.

Score: 93, Monica Larner, June 2016

James Suckling

Tight and racy young Barolo with walnut, hazelnut and ripe berry character. Full body, tight palate, silky tannins and a savory finish. Better in 2017 but delicious now.

Score: 93

Vinous

The 2011 Barolo Bricco Viole is unusually soft and open at this stage. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and menthol are all given an extra kick of brightness and minerality, two signatures of this high altitude site in Barolo. In 2011, the Bricco Viole is a bit more open than it typically is, but in exchange, readers will get more near-term appeal.

Score: 92, Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

Cherry, licorice, leather and tobacco flavors offer a mix of sweet and savory in this red. Stays supple until the edgy tannins take over on the finish, but finds equilibrium as the long aftertaste plays out. Best from 2019 through 2035. 350 cases made.

Score: 92, Bruce Sanderson, September 30, 2015

Wine Enthusiast

Rose, iris, dark berry and baking spice aromas emerge on this taut wine. The dense palate doles out mature black cherry, resin, cinnamon, vanilla and a hint of toast balanced by fine-grained tannins and bright acidity.

Score: 91, Kerin O'Keefe, February 1, 2016

I rate wines using the 100-points scale. I have used this point system for close to 25 years. I still believe it is the simplest way to rate a wine, with its origins from grade school in the United States. A wine that I rate 90 points or more is outstanding (A), and worth buying. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
